Icelandic Dreams

I am ecstatic to share with you my visit to Iceland. I did not have a solid grasp of what this country would be and feel like, only wide-eyed curiosity enveloped me of a place not known by many to be included in their list of travel destinations. Has it crossed your mind to ever plan a trip there?

Iceland dates back to 874 AD and is an island country known as the land of fire and ice. Its beautiful and surreal landscape is otherworldly not found anywhere else in the world. Reykjavík is the capital city founded in 1786 with a quaint architectural setting and wonderful culinary delight notably fresh fish and seafood. According to the Global Peace Index (GPI), Iceland is ranked not only one of the safest countries in the world but from 2008 to 2020, they were the safest country in the world. It is startling to believe that petty crime and robbery are rare, and violent crime is near absent there.

Outside of Reykjavik lies the vast expanse of exquisite geology and countryside Iceland is renowned for. Everything you dreamt about seeing nature’s totality is found in this mesmerizing country. All that I saw and experienced was unreal, from powerful cascading waterfalls, ice-age glaciers, ice caps, winter Northern Lights, and volcanoes to geothermal sites. Even an excursion to the Blue Lagoon was amazing! Constructed on geothermal salt water mixed with the concentrated mineral of silica that makes the warm water so blue, being engulfed in its locale was incredibly magical, tranquil, and healing. Also when you are in Iceland, be sure to visit the unique Icelandic horses. They are indigenous, stout, and such adorable animals to be around.

To put it in perspective, never in my life has a country evoked in me so much appreciation and joy in peaceful living and dutiful care of their environment as Iceland. The people are noticeably proud of their heritage and exceptionally kind to one another and visitors alike. Iceland is and will always be a very special destination for me and one that should be high on your list of travels. You will come away feeling euphoric and passionate about taking great care of Mother Earth, your culture, history, and above all, your people.

Born in Saigon, Vietnam, I arrived in America at seven years old as a war refugee in 1975. I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy, happily married with two grown children, and reside in Colorado. A horrific injury in 2014 forever changed my life, leaving me an incomplete quadriplegic. Despite facing this unexpected journey, living in the moment remains fruitful, joyous, and appreciative. To be human is to show kindness to one another. Let go of your fears, prejudices, and desires and be alive in every waking moment to cherish the gravity of life and the gifts it has bestowed upon us. Turn and look at the person to your left, right, and all around, and project your inner being to be good to yourself and everyone. We are all born from the same fabric, so surround each other with unconditional love, support, and warmth in your hearts. Our time on Earth is precious and should be embraced with immense gratitude.
